Here’s pretty much everything that was said in the postgame from Iowa’s 30-27 loss to Northern Illinois on Saturday.
Sophomore QB Jake Rudock discusses the out route that doomed the Hawkeyes vs. NIU.
Linebacker Anthony Hitchens says this is a completely different team. The offense can score, and it couldn’t last year.
Senior linebacker James Morris adds his perspective. The mantra is “the season doesn’t stop after one game.” Iowa teams generally improve as seasons go on. Last year, it didn’t happen. Needs to happen this year.
Sophomore CB Jordan Lomax talks about the triple move that got him for a 40-yard TD and how the defense plugged in and fought. He’s a maybe for next week, he said, but he did interviews and that’s generally a good sign.
Sophomore DE Drew Ott discusses the defense’s effort, which was there. It had to put out a couple of fires too many.
RB Mark Weisman was not happy. He wants Iowa to be more physical.
Kirk Ferentz transcript
NIU coach Rod Carey at the podium:
“First off, I give a ton of credit to Iowa. They are a storie program, a great football team and they are well coached. They did some things to us today that really slowed us down, and it was really hard sledding. Offensively, they are going to try and wear you out. With that being said, I give our guys and our coaching staff credit on this. Our guys just believe. They have a belief that if it gets in that situation we are going to make the plays and we did today. That belief saw us through some tough times. Our defense, talk about them. What a great performance by them. They just bent, bent, bent but they never broke. They never gave up on each other. Offensively, same thing, you can carbon copy over on that side. Iowa was getting after us and we had to find some ways to make some plays some other ways and we did. Between Da’Ron (Brown), and Jordan (Lynch) and Tommylee (Lewis), some big plays were out there for us today, and that’s what they were giving us so that’s what we took. Obviously, Simsy (Mathew Sims), I don’t even need to talk about him a whole bunch. He’s made a bunch and he is going to make a bunch more this year.”
On fake punt:
“We had to find a way to make a play. Like I said, they hemmed us up on offense and we had to do something to get going. We were down by seven and our defense was holding in there. We thought we had an opportunity to run it, saw what we did and then waited for the correct time and executed it.”
On what this win means:
“It means we are 1-0. You guys can talk about the significance of it and all those things. I will leave that up to you. You are way better at it than I am. I know this, we are 1-0 and we have a bye week and then we have to go get another one on the road. Then we come home. All that is in our sites right now is Idaho. We are going to enjoy this for 24 hours, I told the guys we would and then after that the page is turned.”
