IOWA CITY — Here is a 4 1/2-minute snippet from Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz’s press conference after the Hawkeyes’ 30-27 loss to Northern Illinois Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.
Mike, how frustrating is it to sit through a KF press conference? Does he ever get asked a tough question or does the press corp just throw softball questions up to him?
John; How easy is it to criticize Mike and the press corp? What questions did you want asked? Please provide an example, not a softball negative remark.
Come on Tom. you know what John meant. KF has been historically asked ‘softball’ questions. Just wait until you hear what questions make it to the air during “Excuse Talk” wednesday night. Mike and the rest of the press corps need to be very careful when lobbing questions to the 4 million dollar man. Covering these games is how they make their bread and butter! Become a thorn in the side of KF, and suddenly, you don’t get the luxury press-box passes any more (and all the free food & drink within), nor do you get the field passes or access to the locker room…. not going to make too much of a living if all you can do is cover Jefferson & Washington now, are you?
Matt, you started on-topic and then went off the rails a bit by letting your frustration with the football program become personal against the media. Everyone knows that Iowa is a soft market for media coverage, and rightly so. Look at what happened a couple of years ago when KF was pressed by Rob Howe about blackballing DJK = Ferentz got pizzy and promptly ended his “on the side”, after-press-conference interviews with all media; sadly there was usually more info from these sessions than the PC.
I will give Tom credit: he is the first of the defend-the-program/KF-regardless-of-results to show up here. We don’t agree with on much, but he was correct in his post and anyone following Iowa sports the past few decades knows it. It’s 100% acceptable to be disgusted by yet another loss to a MAC team AT HOME (apparently we’re not stealing the GOOD MAC recruits?) but reality says that KF will be here AT LEAST 5 more seasons = unless some Iowans win the next $300M Powerball jackpot and decide otherwise. With only 1 1/2 good seasons of the last eight, doing anything but HOPING for improvement and maintaining quality teams year in and year out is all we can do.
(I must say – these types of games must do wonders for the fundraising for the Athletic program and the increased ticket prices/reseating next year at Kinnick!)
Mike Miller; Thanks for your support. However, I don’t agree with the U of I or KF getting Rob Howe to move on down the road.
Again, if anyone or I can do Mike Hlas”s job better than he, or has better questions to ask than he does, let’s see you post them. Mike Hlas must be doing something correct or he wouldn’t have a job with the CR Gazette. Yes, I’m a Hawkeye homer and proud of it. I just find it ironic to knock someone down without making a suggestion on how to improve their ability to perform in their profession. I like reading what Mike Hlas puts out there. Do I agree or disagree with everything….no. He makes me think and am thankful for that. That’s why I subscribe to the “Green Gazette” while not living in the area to buy a paper. Marc, Mike, and Scott are worth my monthly charge for admission to their stories/commentary.
Matt Albrecht, I was in Hawaii for the very first time last month, but only in Kauai. Loved it and would like to return sometime. What, in your opinion, is the best place to visit in all the islands?
