CEDAR RAPIDS – The parent Minnesota Twins announced Tuesday that starting pitcher Jose Berrios has been placed on the Cedar Rapids Kernels‘ disabled list with a contusion of his right elbow and lefty pitcher David Hurlbut has been promoted to high-Class A Fort Myers.
It also was announced left-handed pitcher Miguel Sulbaran has been acquired by the Twins as the player to be named later in an earlier trade for catcher Drew Butera and will be assigned to the Kernels’ roster.
Berrios threw 7.1 innings of shutout ball Saturday night at Kane County. Considered one of the top pitching prospects in the Twins organization, the Puerto Rico native is 7-5 with a 3.45 earned run average in 94 innings this season.
Hurlbut threw in 24 games for the Kernels, recording a 3-1 record, six saves and 2.54 earned run average. In 50 innings, he allowed 40 hits, eight walks and struck out 46.
Sulbaran, 19, has been pitching for Great Lakes of the Midwest League, where he was 6-4 with a save and 3.01 ERA in 23 games, 16 starts. He has allowed 89 hits and struck out 85 in 92.2 innings.
The Kernels’ active roster is at 24 players, one under maximum. The club begins a three-game home series Wednesday against Beloit.
