Kirkwood scam warning withdrawn; calls are legitimately on college's behalf

Calls are reminding students that tuition is due

UPDATE: Kirkwood Community College has discovered that a potential scam it warned students about this week is actually a Kirkwood-authorized phone campaign to remind students that tuition is due.

Kathy Kaiser, a Kirkwood spokeswoman, said Wednesday afternoon that the college has contracted with a local call center for the reminder calls, but was taken by surprise to discover that the calls were giving an out-of-state caller ID. Kaiser said that has been changed, and outbound calls for Kirkwood will now give a local area code for caller ID.

On Monday, the college's Facebook page said: "It has come to our attention that a students may be getting calls from 415-683-7860 in California asking for financial aid information on Kirkwood's behalf. This is NOT Kirkwood calling, so please do not give any personal information."

Several Kirkwood students commented on the Facebook post that they've gotten the call.

Kaiser attributed the initial reaction to heightened awareness of scams and a desire to do what's best for students.
