BICYCLE FRIENDLIER: Iowa City recently moved a step ahead on the bicycle friendly path. The League of American Bicyclists announced that the city’s status had been raised to silver, the highest level among five Iowa communities on the Bicycle Friendly Communities list in Iowa and the third-highest rating the organization issues. It’s based on the city’s investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, policies and infrastructure. Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls, University Heights and Des Moines are rated at the bronze level.

WELL-ROUNDED DOCS: We like the potential of new curriculum offerings planned for the University of Iowa’s medical students. There will be more opportunities for creative writing and focus on other humanities subjects in an effort to help physicians become more well-rounded and better service patients.

STILL ON TOP: Only a couple of dozen mid-size American cities have earned Moody’s Investors Service’s top bond ratings. Cedar Rapids continues to be one of those despite the challenges of flood recovery. That rating is critical to getting lower interest rates on bonds issued for various projects.
