The first thing that jumps out at you when you see Iowa's first depth chart for 2013, there's no fullback.

What means remains to be seen, but for at least Wednesday, Iowa doesn't have a fullback (even though there are a few on the roster) but does have a Y-back, which had tight ends Jake Duzey and Henry Krieger Coble listed at that spot.

After the second open scrimmage last August, Iowa offensive coordinator talked about the "Y" and the "B" positions at tight end.

"The 'B' position guy is the 'move' guy," Davis said. "He has to be able to be a back, tight end and wide receiver. Jake can do those things."

This was after Duzey, a 6-4, 245-pound sophomore, caught the only TD pass, a 25-yarder from backup quarterback Jake Rudock, during that August scrimmage.

“He runs well, catches the ball well and creates mismatches,” Davis said. “He’s a ‘B’ position guy. He has to be able to be a back, tight end and wide receiver. Jake can do those things."

Head coach Kirk Ferentz said Wednesday the fullback position isn't dead. Iowa will mix and match personnel groups the spring, trying to get a feel for what works best and who fits where.

"The goal is to get your best 11 out there," Ferentz said. "Down and distance plays into that, but in first-and-10 situations . . . last year we wanted to use both [running backs] Mark Weisman and Damon Bullock in there at the same time. That's something we're still interested in. We're thin at fullback right now, so we'd sure like to try to develop that position.

"I envision us playing with a fullback. I envision us playing with two tight ends and three wide receivers, the things we've done in the past. Now, we have to see what we can piece together."

Defensive tackle Louis Trinca-Pasat (shoulder) and offensive tackle Nolan MacMillan (undisclosed) are out this spring. RB Michael Malloy is doubtful after suffering an ankle injury a few weeks ago. No surgery, but he is in a boot. Safety Ruben Lile (ACL) and RB Barkley Hill (ACL) got a "we'll be careful with them" from Ferentz on Wednesday.
