Earlier today I covered Match Day at the University of Iowa med school. Out of 137 med students, 129 participated in the National Residency Matching Program, which determines where students will pursue their residency training. Envelopes were handed out one-by-one, but it was a pretty quick process. I knew I could drive myself crazy trying to make a huge photo gallery by chasing down student after student as they all quickly opened their envelopes, but this felt like a time to hone in on a few great moments rather than a bunch of mediocre ones. I had spotted Fransetta and her daughter, Esperanza, and stayed close by while waiting for her name to be called. After the initial excitement, I wandered through the crowd watching for potential moments to develop. Sure enough, I saw two students approaching each other, raised my camera, and was pleasantly surprised with a huge bear hug as they shared their placements with each other.

Sterling took several years off after undergraduate studies at University of Illinois in Chicago to raise and homeschool her daughter Esperanza Sterling, 19 (left), and will be at Howard University for her residency in psychiatry. Hutchinson is headed to University of California at Irvine for her pathology residency.
