Three’s are wild for some Upper Iowa wrestlers.

Senior Trevor Franklin is in search of his third straight national title. Mitchell Schultz has a chance to earn all-America honors for the third consecutive year. Carl Broghammer will look to match or surpass his third-place national finish in 2011.

The Peacocks will have six total wrestlers compete in this weekend’s NCAA Division II Championships at Birmingham, Ala. Competition begins Friday at 11 a.m.

Third-ranked Franklin enters the tournament with a 14-5 overall mark and faces Zak Hale, of Anderson University (S.C.) in the opening round at 133 pounds. Franklin won the 133-pound title last season, claiming the 2011 crown at 125. Franklin qualified by placing second at the super regional at Young Arena in Waterloo on Feb. 24.

Schultz, a former Postville prep, advanced to his third straight NCAA tournament, placing fifth and sixth the past two seasons. Upper Iowa’s fifth-ranked 184-pounder is 15-4, earning a spot with a third-place super regional finish. Schultz will take on Newberry’s Mitch Brown in the first round.

Broghammer placed third two years ago as a freshman, but did not qualify last season. He is ranked second and was a super regional runner-up, posting a 36-4 record this year. Broghammer, who has pins in half of his victories, wrestles Central Oklahoma’s Znick Ferrell.

Upper Iowa seniors Bryce Lumzy (31-11 at 157) and Wade Gobin (34-12) at 165, and 174-pound sophomore Blake Sorensen (32-11) also qualified.  The Peacocks placed sixth as a team last season and have finished in the top-10 four straight years and five times in the last six.
