So comes the latest big development in the race to win the Iowa U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Tom Harkin.
Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Latham says he’s not running. Nope.
Here’s his email to supporters:
Dear Friend:
I want to thank you for your continued and faithful friendship and support. I also want to thank you and the many Iowans who have reached out to me with their support and encouragement to enter the race for Iowa’s open U.S. Senate seat in 2014. I cannot tell you how much I appreciated the calls, conversations, emails and notes. I feel truly blessed and humbled to represent in Congress the greatest state and people.
My service to Iowa has never been motivated by titles, accolades or a drive to secure a place for my name in history or on a building. I have always been motivated by a responsibility and commitment to the people of Iowa, who elected me to faithfully work for an America that provides greater freedom and more opportunity for our children and grandchildren.
The opportunity to serve Iowa in the U.S. Senate is appealing to this farm kid who grew up here, raised a family here, and helped grow a family business in Iowa. I love Iowa.
However, only 56 days ago I took an oath to “faithfully discharge the duties” of an office with which the people of Iowa’s Third Congressional District entrusted to me. I cannot in good conscience launch a two-year statewide campaign that will detract from the commitment I made to the people who elected me, at a time when our nation desperately needs less campaigning and more leadership.
Again, thank you for your continued friendship. I ask for your continued support and guidance as we work together for this great nation and her people.
Many implications. Does this clear the way for U.S. Rep. Steve King? Does somebody more establishmenty step up? Is Bruce Braley doing a quiet fist-pump?
The race for the GOP nomination is now wide open. Maybe you have thoughts.
When Tom Harkin announced his retirement I said Steve King will be the Akin/Mourdock of 2014 and Bruce Braley will be our next Senator. That’s looking more and more likely.
Just google “Steve King quotes” to get a preview of what will be featured in some of the ads.
It would have been more helpful if you would have linked an actual left wing liberal blog to make your point, Rich. By your suggestion, I came up with the author.
Congressman King is in his 6th term after being redistricted to liberal Johnson county, recently beating out a well known Iowan and wife of big spender Tom. Think about it Rich, if Congressman King says a few things that aren’t PC, what’s the lefts excuse for continuing to elect big mouth liberals?
That said, What a gracious and refreshing letter from Mr. Latham. I have never lived in any of his districts but it’s clear to see how he wins so easily.
I would like to see a conservative women run for some of these open seats. Kim Reynolds or Renee Schulte would make great representatives for Iowa and the best part, I can vision the libs sweating at the thought.
This appears to be another example of just posting an idea you have in your head without any fact checking — you never learn. Congress Steve King’s district is no where near Johnson County ( unless both being in IA means “near” )! As far as providing a link, from anywhere on the political spectrum, there are so many it might be more rewarding to simply search “congressman steve king quotes” and take your pick of the hits — some will like his quotes. As far a your “big mouth” comment, King is hardly noted for being quiet ! If you want to hear him you might check WHO radio’s Jan Mickelson’s weekly morning show, a significant mouthpiece for King. He’s got plenty to say.
If that’s all you got Cedric, I say good for you!
Except that Akin/Mourdock were favoured to win before that stuff happened. I don’t think any serious handicapper would say King would favoured over Braley in this election regardless of the things he says.
Unless Republicans find someone better, or something really really really bad happens to the US or Braley, this looks like its Braley’s to lose now.
In other words, yes, Bruce Braley is doing a fist pump, and likely will be the next US Senator from Iowa.
Yep, this is great news. It pretty much guarantees that the seat remains Democratic.
