Much discussion (both pro and con) has been printed about the proposition that we bring a casino to Cedar Rapids. I support this proposal because I feel that the general populous loves growth, loves change and loves the idea of encouraging the younger people to stay here (with opportunities for experience and challenge).
Cedar Rapids is fortunate to have a wonderful community college that instructs and enlightens people of all ages in all kinds of wonderful subjects. They have built a new restaurant complex to use as a tool to train those interested in cooking, baking and restaurant management. They have built a new hotel and developed a curriculum for those interested in staff management and total hotel management.
My children remind me all the time of the importance of actual work experience. Today’s answer for finding employment may be internships. When you look at the potential employment opportunities that could result from this casino venture and realize that the students at the Kirkwood Culinary and Hotel Management programs could see great practical training (and perhaps employment), maybe you would realize this is a great opportunity for our city and our constituents.
Whether you want to become a chef, a hotel manager, a greens and parks keeper or an accountant, the invitation of a new casino could be your key to your future. Perhaps part of the agreement, if the people elect to pursue this, should be the requirement that the casino work with Kirkwood to create so many required internships each year.
