The University of Iowa earned the second seed for the final bracket of the National Wrestling Coaches Association/Cliff Keen National Duals “Mat Mayhem” at Williams Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. Competition opens with two quarterfinal rounds Friday, beginning at 6 p.m. The semifinals are set for 1 p.m. Saturday with the finals at 7 p.m.
The second-ranked Hawkeyes open with seventh-seeded Cornell University on Friday at 8 p.m. The other quarterfinal duals are No. 1 Oklahoma State and No. 8 Illinois, fourth-seeded Ohio State faces No. 5 Missouri and No. 3 Minnesota takes on sixth-seeded Virginia Tech.
Iowa is making its 19th appearance in the national duals competition. The Hawkeyes are 69-11-3 all-time in the event, placing third last year. Iowa won its sixth national duals crown in 2010, and have three runner-up finishes.
Iowa enters with a 19-1 record. The Hawkeyes have victories over Illinois, Ohio State and Minnesota already this season. If seeds hold, Iowa and Minnesota would wrestle in the semifinals. If the Hawkeyes are able to reach the championship dual, they could get a chance to avenge its only loss of the season, which was an 18-12 setback to the top-ranked Cowboys in Stillwater, Okla.
