UPDATE: An Iowa City teenager accused of attempted murder after attacking a customer Monday in the Red Pepper Grill stabbed the victim four times with an eight-inch knife, police reported.
Heather Stanfield was an employee at the Grill, 517 S. Riverside Dr. in Iowa City, when the victim – who has not been identified by police – came in for a sandwich at 11:46 a.m. Monday, according to a criminal complaint.
The female victim was sitting in a booth after ordering sandwiches, when Stanfield is accused of eying the woman , then retreating to the kitchen to retrieve an eight-inch knife, police reported.
The victim told investigators that Stanfield stabbed her four times – in the left hand, the left elbow, and in the front and back sides of her right shoulder, according to the complaint. The woman said she fought Stanfield to keep her from continuing the attack, and a male bystander intervened, according to police.
The victim, who told police she didn’t know Stanfield before the attack, said she was afraid the assault would have continued had the man not helped to disarm her assailant.
Iowa City police Sgt. Vicki Lalla said that although the two females didn't personally know each other, they "knew of each other."
Stanfield was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, a class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison.
Johnson County Attorney Janet Lyness said all juveniles who are arrested on suspicion of a forcible felony have to be charged as adults. But, she said, her attorney could petition a judge to move the case down to juvenile court.
Stanfield does not have a criminal history that is public in online court records. She spent the night Monday in the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center, but she was transferred Tuesday morning to the Benton County Jail, which has the capability to house juveniles in a separate part of the facility.[mqMap key="VA25" width="680" height="420" src="http://www.mapquest.com/embed?icid=mqdist_mb_wp&c=VA25&maptype=map&zm=15&cr=41.6541163415562,-91.54069986286582&projection=sm&showScale=false"]My New Map[/mqMap]
