History tells us that most civilizations collapse from a decline in morality. More than 40 years ago, Arnold Toynbee, famous British historian, stated: “Of the 22 civilizations that have appeared in history, 19 of them collapsed when they reached the moral state the United States is in now.”
Will Durant, American historian, observed: “A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself within.” He also offered this insight: “There is no significant example in history, before our time, of a society successfully maintaining moral life without the aid of religion.”
Our nation is rejecting God and attempting to redefine good and evil with unjust laws. St. Augustine and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us that civil laws that contradict the moral laws are always unjust. Secularism is replacing Christianity as the primary religion in America. Our nation is in a spiritual crisis, heading for self-destruction.
Forty years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized the killing of a group of our citizens,
unborn children. God says in sacred Scripture thou shall not kill and love God with your total being and love your neighbor as yourself Isn’t the unborn child our neighbor? Isn’t killing an unborn child a grave sin against the Fifth Commandment? Is killing an unborn child an act of love?
Our nation has continued to accept this killing by electing leaders who apparently believe this killing is acceptable.
Some of the lies that support the evil of abortion: contraceptive sex is safe and reduces the number of abortions; sex is primarily for pleasure, not procreation; chastity and virginity are passe; a mother owns the God-given gift of new life in her womb; it’s a fetus, a blob of tissue, and not a child; the right to life begins when the government says so; the abortion industry merits taxpayer financial support; a woman’s right to contraception and abortion supersedes the right to religious liberty; unborn children with deformities don’t have the right to life; pregnancy is a disease and children are a burden; fathers have no rights regarding their unborn child.
Many Americans stand up for life through prayer vigils, marches for life, educational forums and ministry to parents and post-abortive mothers and fathers. Many states have placed restrictions on abortion. Shamefully, Iowa is not one of them. Many more need to join this spiritual battle to stop the terror in the womb and return America to a nation under God in whom we honor and trust. Please pray to God for forgiveness for our killing of more than 50 million innocent children created in God’s image.Bill Brennan of Cedar Rapids is a member of the Coalition for Life of Iowa board.
