Mount Mercy University’s award-winning student newspaper, the Mount Mercy Times, was recognized for outstanding achievement at the Iowa College Media Association (ICMA) annual conference in Des Moines.

“The Times staff should be proud of their accomplishments,” said Times Advisor and Associate Professor of Communication Joe Sheller. “They work hard to provide the campus with a worthy publication, and the hard work paid off.”

The student newspaper earned three first place awards, including Best Editorial Leadership by Ben Wood, Best Blog by Brittany Hubler, and Best Feature Story by Laura Gentzler.

“I’m especially proud that the Times staff won the editorial leadership award. Editorial writing has become a strength of the Times, and expressing a clear student voice on relevant controversies is one of the main services a student newspaper provides to a campus community,” Sheller said.

Other winners include:

Best Feature Photograph, second place: Jun Endo

Best Feature Story, third place: Daniel Schloss

Best Opinion Writing, honorable mention: Brittany Hubler

Best Sports Feature Story, honorable mention: Jun Endo

Best Sports Story, honorable mention: Maddy Jones

Best Inside Page Design, honorable mention: Shannon Brown
