Kevin Uhde is waving goodbye to the Cedar Rapids Community School District.

June 30 will be his last day as principal of Johnson Elementary School, also known as Johnson School of the Arts. He notified district administrators and building staff of his plans last week and sent a letter with the information to Johnson parents on Feb. 11.

Uhde, who is in his second year as Johnson's principal, called his time at the school both rewarding and fulfilling. He said his decision to retire was driven by a desire to spend time with his family.

"I'm ready," he said. "I have grandchildren. I can do things I want to do."

Uhde said he was not aware of any plans or a timeline regarding finding his replacement.

Uhde's retirement is not official until it has school board approval. According to Marcia Hughes, community relations supervisor for the district, board members are expected to vote on his retirement at their next regular meeting, scheduled for Monday, Feb. 25.
