That’s the rumor out there.
Connor McCaffery is a 6-foot-3 (and growing) eighth-grader and quite the accomplished player from all accounts. The son of Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery is likely good enough to play varsity high-school basketball next season as a freshman.
“Very talented,” said Jamie Johnson, who helps coach him with the Iowa Barnstormers AAU program. “I call him a point forward. He can handle the ball, he can shoot it, he sees the floor … He’s a mid-major (Division I) college recruit at worst. Depending on how much he grows, he could easily be a high-major player.”
But despite the family living in Coralville and Connor going to middle school in the Iowa City West district, it’s possible he’ll attend high school next year somewhere else. In another city, 30-some miles up Interstate-380.
The McCafferys are contemplating having Connor go to school and play hoops at Cedar Rapids Xavier. In fact, the family attended a “Discover Xavier Night” informational meeting for prospective students recently.
Why would Fran McCaffery send his son to a school so far away, when there are two highly esteemed coaches in Iowa City in West’s Steve Bergman and City High’s Don Showalter? Then there’s a smaller parochial school in Regina available as well.
Good questions. There’s a lot of speculation out there, but nothing nefarious, nothing that smacks of “recruiting.” The McCafferys – Fran and his wife Margaret – apparently are simply trying to figure out the best place for their son and his budding hoops career.
Bottom line is it’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out.
