Security through superior firepower

I found Sunday’s (Feb. 3) Doonesbury cartoon to be rather intriguing, for what it didn’t say.

The obvious message seems to be that we are an inconsistent people. We expend great effort in reaction to an attack on our country, but we back away from efforts to protect our children from dangers within.

I don’t know if that was the intended message, but I find a more subtle message to be more meaningful: We are a sadly consistent people — whatever the danger, we seek security through superior firepower.
