Linn-Mar late starts kept children safe

It is often a tough decision when the choice is between closing schools, scheduling a late arrival or proceeding as usual. The decision for late arrivals on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 in the Linn-Mar district was the correct one.

I drove a morning bus on both of those days and the road conditions were very dangerous, even on the hard-surfaced roads. There was blowing snow, drifting and spots that were very slippery because of ice. Between 6:50 a.m. and 8:20 a.m., when most L-M students are on buses, the traffic is heaviest with people struggling to get to work on time.

Two hours later, the traffic is much lighter and there is enough daylight to significantly improve a driver’s perception of road conditions. Even with the late arrival, the L-M bus drivers witnessed several accidents. Our first priority is to keep your children safe.
