Authorities say five people have safely escaped flames that damaged a house in the east-central Iowa city of Traer.

KCRG-TV9 says firefighters were dispatched to the house around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. Authorities say a male occupant noticed the fire in the living room, so he awakened his wife so they could flee. Three teenage children escaped through an upstairs window.

The fire cause is being investigated.
