History was made Saturday afternoon as the Kirkwood women’s basketball team took on Southwestern Community College. Those in attendance witnessed more than the third ranked Eagles (19-3) victory over Southwestern Community College 99-44. After the last seconds ticked off the clock, Head Coach Kim Muhl had won for the 700th time in his career.
Already voted into the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) Hall of Fame in 2011, Muhl (700-126) is currently fourth on the list among active coaches in the NJCAA. In his 24 seasons, he has led his teams to 20 regional finals, 14 national tournaments and 6 national titles. Now he has win number 700 under his belt.
“Of course I’m happy about it,” said Muhl. “But that’s not something I think a lot about. We still have a lot to do this season. We can’t get caught up in any distractions at this point. There are still games to play before tournament time.”
The Eagles have an 11-game win streak as they strive for another conference championship and beyond. Seven hundred wins is a level of success that a limited number of college coaches have reached, but Muhl has other things on his mind according to Assistant Coach Joe Hruska.
“I’ve been with Kim since ’93,” Hruska said. “We’ve had a lot of good teams. This one is as good as some of our best teams in the past. But we still need to keep working towards our goals for the team. Kim doesn’t keep track of career wins or other things like that. He’s more focused on this season. That’s the only thing that matters.”
Muhl’s Eagles look to continue their win streak this Wednesday when they host rival DMACC (16-5.) The contest versus DMACC is Kirkwood’s “Whiteout Game.” Fans are encouraged to wear white to support the Eagles. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.With the most credit programs of any community college in Iowa, Kirkwood Community College boasts more than 25,000 annual college-credit students, while maintaining one of the lowest tuitions in the state.
