What causes a ton of the dissonance in college football recruiting is, of course, the unknown.
That extends from fans to coaches to the players under recruitment. From the player’s view, sometimes you never know who likes you until they offer a scholarship. You see free college and it’s probably prudent to say yes to that. But then, a bigger, better Big Ten place offers you free college.
Desmond King, Iowa’s latest commitment for the 2013 class, received an offer from Central Michigan committed to Central Michigan last summer. Then, not long thereafter, the 5-foot-9, 185 defensive back from Detroit’s Crockett High School, switched to Ball State.
During his visit to Iowa last weekend, King, who finished with a Michigan state record 29 career interceptions, said yes to the Hawkeyes. The good news for Iowa is he won’t have long to think about this one. The national signing period is next Wednesday.
“It feels great,” King told HawkeyeReport.com. “I know I’ve got to get bigger, stronger, and faster because there’s a lot of talent that I’m going to be competing against, but I can’t wait.”
King had eight scholarship offers, with all but two (Iowa and Indiana) coming from the Mid-American Conference. Josh Helmholdt, Rivals.com’s midwest recruiting analyst, told HawkeyeReport that he believes height and speed were issues. He also said King did receive more Big Ten offers, but they came with qualifications.
King is Iowa’s 16th recruit for the 2013 class. During his visit, Iowa coaches told him they want him to play cornerback, making King the second corner commit in the ’13 class. Iowa also is bringing in Malik Rucker at the position. [EDIT: I originally had Rucker as a safety here, but I had him listed as a corner below. He's a corner.]
Last season, King rushed for 2,368 yards rushing and 32 touchdowns. On defense, he made 41 tackles and had seven interceptions.
– With King’s commitment, Iowa is at 84 scholarships. Schools are allowed 85. The Big Ten allows schools to oversign by three players if the school has a set plan in place to be at 85 before fall camps begin. Last signing period, the Big Ten and Iowa reiterated that scholarships with them are for four years and aren’t a renewable proposition every year. (Basically, no running off players.)
– With four scholarships remaining, it looks like Iowa is in it for at least three signing day decisions. CB/S Jacquille Veii and wide receiver Brian Lemelle told HawkeyeReport.com that they will decide on signing day. Linebacker Reggie Spearman also is a likely signing day decision.
– Lemelle visited Iowa this weekend. Iowa remains in his top three despite the fact that the Hawkeyes don’t have a wide receiver coach. Erik Campbell is leaving Iowa. The school listed a job opening for an assistant coach last week. Lemelle told HawkeyeReport that he wouldn’t rule out Iowa, but “it makes the decision harder.” Lemelle is down to Iowa, Connecticut and Temple.
– Derrick Mitchell Jr. made his official visit this weekend and told HR that Iowa will bring him in as a wide receiver.

THis is another guy who was not wanted by many programs. Go to his scout link at:
http://iowa.scout.com/a.z?s=8&p=8&c=1&nid=5564795
scroll all the way to the bottom and look at the programs that he was interested in and did not offer him a scholorship. I have found that is the true measure of a prospects worth. Not bullet proof, but true way more than not. He is ranked as the #60 CB and since we have the 50 something rated class I guess he’ll fit right in to our new scheme……..which to to be terrible in a terrible conference.
For the record I would LOVE it if scout.com was wrong….and I in turn would be wrong too about this class. I don’t see that happening. Maybe KF should get another million for getting some talent in IC that way he could earn some of his hefty salary
