A 49-year-old Iowa City man accused of stealing tools from a construction area at the Hampton Inn last month was arrested Tuesday when he returned to the hotel for free breakfast and coffee.

Hampton Inn employees told investigators that they had seen Dwaine Allen Toran at the 1200 First Ave. hotel in Coralville on several occasions, but he’s not been a guest or an employee there. At about 1:45 p.m. on Dec. 23, Toran was seen entering a construction area at the hotel and piling up tools and putting them in a bag, according to Coralville police.

He left the site with the tools, which weren’t his, witnesses told police.

At 7:13 a.m. Tuesday, officers were called to the Hampton Inn because Toran – who was not a guest at the hotel – was helping himself to coffee and breakfast items, according to the complaint.

He was recognized as a suspect in the prior burglary at the hotel and was arrested.

Toran was still being held in the Johnson County Jail on Wednesday morning in lieu of a $7,500 cash-only bond, according to online jail records. He’s facing charges of third-degree burglary, a felony, and third-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor.

He has prior theft convictions, including ones in June 2011 and October 2010.
