Five teenagers have been arrested after three vehicles and a snowmobile were stolen within a matter of hours in Cedar Rapids.
Police recovered all three vehicles – two vans and a pickup with a snowmobile in the back. The teenagers were arrested around 2 a.m. Friday morning when police were sent to a house at 2719 O Ave. NW when someone reported the smell of marijuana.
Zackary T. McElroy, 18, and Michael P. Candler, 18, both of Cedar Rapids, have been charged with four counts of second-degree theft. Brian Kapurch, 16, and Dakota Gaines, 16, both of Cedar Rapids, and Ryan Frieden, 17, of Fairfax, have each been charged in juvenile court with three counts of operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent. Frieden faces an additional juvenile charge of second-degree theft for allegedly participating in the snowmobile theft, officials said.
Cedar Rapids police took the first stolen vehicle report around 11:40 p.m. Thursday when a pickup was stolen from the 2700 block of 60th Avenue SW. The owner reported that he had gone into the Diamond V Mills plant and found the pickup missing when he returned.
Officers found the pickup around 1:10 a.m. at 3108 Blackberry Circle SW, with a snowmobile in the back end that had also been reported stolen.
Less than an hour later, police found a van parked at 60th Avenue and 26th Street SW that had also been reported stolen. The teenagers are also accused of stealing another van at some point on Thursday.
Records show the teenagers were found at Kapurch’s residence. In addition to the charges, all five teens also were issued citations for disorderly house.An investigation was continuing, police said.
