IOWA CITY — Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said Friday morning that junior Melsahn Basabe will play Sunday at No. 2 Michigan.

Basabe, a 6-foot-7 forward, injured his right ankle in the first half against Indiana and did not play the second half. That injury came after he tweaked his left ankle and played only four minutes against Coppin State on Dec. 22.

“He’s fine,” McCaffery said. “That’s other advantage of going Monday-Sunday. We were giving him a couple of days. (Thursday) he only went through half the practice. We’ll see how he’s doing today. He looked good (Thursday), I thought.”

Basabe played only nine minutes against Indiana and scored two points. He added a block, a rebound, s steal and a turnover.

Basabe started the first 52 games of his career but has become the Hawkeyes’ first post player off the bench this year. He averages 15.6 minutes a game and ranks fourth in scoring at 6.6 points a game. He’s also fourth in rebounding (4.1) and leads Iowa in blocks with 19.
