Iowa’s football team was never ranked this season, but its coach is No. 5.

Kirk Ferentz was tabbed by Forbes Magazine as the fifth-most powerful coach in the college game. (To see Forbes’ lists of the most-powerful coaches, college football’s most valuable teams, and the best and worst college teams for the money, click here.)

The reason apparently comes down solely by Ferentz’s contract. The magazine’s capsule on Ferentz:

Bob Stoops and Kirk Ferentz at an Insight Bowl press conference last December (Liz Martin/The Gazette-KCRG)

The Hawkeyes haven’t been particularly competitive of late, but Ferentz’s contract offers him some incredible job security. If he were to be terminated without cause, Ferentz would be entitled to 75% of his remaining contract, worth about $21 million.

The rest of the Top 10:

1. Nick Saban, Alabama

2. Gary Patterson, TCU

3. Urban Meyer, Ohio State

4. Bob Stoops, Oklahoma

6. Mack Brown, Texas

7. Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State

8. Steve Spurrier, South Carolina

9. Les Miles, LSU

10. Chip Kelly, Oregon

  1. Anybody else thinking Barta jumped the gun on this Mega Contract?

    • Absolutely Perry. It is not his money, so what the heck. The Governor gives bonuses that run higher than state mandated salaries – what the heck, it is not his money.

  2. How much pressure and incentive exists in Iowa City?

  3. With that much “power” you’d think we could end up ranked in the top 25 every year and at least going to a crappy bowl game.

  4. Phil;
Know the facts…the state pays $0, his contract his paid by the U of Iowa Athletic Department which raises money through ticket sales, contributions, apparal contracts, broadcast contracts, and more I have left out. Again, a tax dollar does not go to the Athletic Department.

  5. Steve: Yeah. You’d think. Next time I have a crummy used car I want to sell, I hope Gary Barta comes to my door with the newspaper ad in hand and his checkbook out.
