If this isn’t a record, it should be.

Four former Iowa tight ends scored touchdowns in National Football League games on Sunday. Why does nearly every sportscaster insist on calling it “The National Football League” on the air, by the way? Just call it the NFL. It saves syllables, saves breath, saves brain cells.

Anyway, thanks to my friend Scott Long (@scottcomedy on Twitter) for pointing out the note about the tight ends to me. Scott, a very talented comedian, will perform at Penguin’s Comedy Club in Cedar Rapids on Jan. 4-5.

Here is the roll call:

Brandon Myers, Oakland: He had a whopping 14 catches for 130 yards and a 17-yard touchdown against Cleveland. Both numbers were career-highs. He had six catches for 73 yards on the Raiders’ final possession in their 20-17 loss. Myers tied Tim Brown’s franchise-record for receptions in a game. The TD was the third of his career, all this year. Myers has 69 catches for 721 yards this season, after totaling 32 receptions in his first three NFL seasons.

Tony Moeaki, Kansas City: Four catches for 54 yards and a 1-yard TD catch in the Chiefs’ 27-21 win over Carolina. It was his first TD of the season, fourth in his two-year career.

Dallas Clark, Tampa Bay:  Three catches for 21 yards, including an 11-yard score in the Bucs’ 31-23 loss at Denver. That’s 50 career touchdowns for the 10-year vet. He has 34 catches for 341 yards this year, and has 5,228 career receiving yards.

Scott Chandler, Buffalo: One catch for 11 yards in the Bills’ 34-18 win over Jacksonville. Obviously, it was a touchdown grab. He has 32 catches this season for 417 yards. The touchdown gave him six this season, tying his number from last year.

  1. What a great highlight film for our tight ends recruiter. Maybe we should go to an all tight end receiving corp and have them simple knock down defensive backs next year for Weisman. It’s not like we’re throwing to them anyway and this way Davis can still bemoan the teams lack of speed for his offense. Myself, I would just like to see giant tight ends knocking around the DBs and forming an honor guard for Weisman on the way to the endzone.
