Officials have rescued half a dozen neglected horses from southern Iowa.

Union County officials and the Animal Rescue League of Iowa took four mares and two colts from the property near Lorimor on Thursday.

The league’s Scott Wilson says the horses had been living without adequate food, shelter and veterinary care for some time. They were taken to the league’s rescue ranch.

Wilson says one of the horses had an infected wound on a leg, but the owner said he couldn’t afford to have the leg treated.
