Alliant Energy warned customers Thursday against a telephone scam targeting small businesses by fraudulently claiming to be Alliant representatives.
Small businesses have been contacted by callers claiming that customer is past due on their utility bill. The callers then ask the small business to provide credit card information for bill payment, and claim that the customer’s electric service will be disconnected if they refuse to provide their credit card number, according to Alliant.
Scam artists may also attempt to convince unsuspecting customers that they can also make a utility payment by providing their bank routing numbers and account information. The calls are coming from an area code that is not located in Iowa, Minnesota or Wisconsin.
If asked for credit card or bank routing information, customers should end the conversation and call Alliant Energy at 1-800-ALLIANT (255-4268) for assistance, the company said. They should also notify law enforcement.
