Hallie Christofferson scored 11 points in a 16-5 second-half surge to lead Iowa State to a 68-50 win over Illinois on Saturday in the championship game of the Junkanoo Jam at the St. Georges High School Gym in Freeport, Bahamas.
Christofferson scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds in just 22 minutes of play as Iowa State improved to 4-0.
Nikki Moody added 16 points and six assists for the Cyclones.
Christofferson was named the tournament’s MVP. Brynn Williamson also made the all-tournament squad.
Iowa State played Saturday without All-Big 12 standout Chelsea Poppens, who missed the game with an injury suffered in Friday’s victory over Loyola-Marymount.
“This win was pretty special,” Iowa State Coach Bill Fennelly said. “We beat a Big Ten team to win a championship without our best player.”
The Cyclones held Illinois (3-2) to just 33 percent shooting from the floor.
FLORIDA 80, NORTHERN IOWA 63 — Jacqui Kalin’s 14 points weren’t enough to prevent the Panthers from falling to the Gators in their second game of the SouthPoint Thanksgiving Tournament in Las Vegas.
Three other UNI players reached double figures, with Amber Kirschbaum, Brittni Donaldson and Stephanie Davison all scoring 10.
The Panthers (2-3) take on North Carolina State at 4:30 today in their final tournament game.
