CEDAR RAPIDS – The trial for a father accused in the death of his 17-month-old daughter is on track to begin next month in Linn County District Court.

Zyriah Schlitter, 25, of Cedar Rapids, is charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment in the death of his daughter Kamryn Schlitter who died from severe head trauma March 28, 2010. Schlitter’s ex-girlfriend, Amy Jo Parmer, 29, of Hiawatha,  is also charged in the case.

In a previous hearing, investigators said Kamryn suffered a subdural hematoma on the left side of her head and severe bruising on her neck, chin, underarms and her chest.

Attorneys during a pre-trial conference Wednesday told a judge the Dec. 3, trial will last more than two weeks based on the number of witnesses to be called and because many of those will give medical or other expert testimony.

Sixth Judicial District Judge Marsha Beckelman said she plans to call about 100 people for the potential jury pool because the  trial could go into the week before Christmas and many may have holiday plans.

Beckelman still hasn’t ruled on a suppression motion regarding Schlitter’s police interview, so she will file written ruling on the suppression and other motions involving rules of evidence  issues taken up Wednesday.

Parmer and Schlitter are both charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment in Kamryn’s death but they are being tried separately. Parmer’s trial is set Jan. 14, 2013.
