Iowa City Community School District Superintendent Stephen Murley is going to have to wait until Tuesday, Dec. 4 for formal approval of his new contract.
The district’s school board voted 6-1 Tuesday night to table a final vote on a new agreement for Murley, with board member Sarah Swisher the lone dissenting vote.
Board member Tuyet Dorau moved to hold off on the contract vote due to last-minute changes to the contract, amendments she found out about last Friday. The changes were so late-breaking that they were not included in the board packet, a concern for board member Jeff McGinness, who said the public should have the opportunity to review Murley’s final contract before the board approves it.
“I just felt that the change was so small,” Swisher said, reiterating her support for the superintendent to have his contract renewed swiftly. “Tabling the vote was inappropriate at this time.”
The superintendent is in the midst of a three-year agreement set to end on June 30, 2013. The school board has spent more than eight months reviewing Murley’s work, and an initial vote on his contract was scheduled for the Aug. 7 meeting.
