Six teens under the age of 18 are facing charges related to sending, showing and asking for obscene photos with their cell phones in Independence, according to a release from the Independence Police Department.
Police said the students were charged on Nov. 13 after a child within the same age group reported a photo on their phone to a parent, who contacted police.
According to Independence police, four students, two age 14 and two age 15, were charged with telephone dissemination of obscene material to minors. A fifth student, age 14, was charged with dissemination and exhibition of obscene material and a sixth student, age 14, was charged with solicitation of telephone dissemination of obscene material.
The charges are aggravated misdemeanors and will be addressed in juvenile court.
Police said this is the first “sexting” incident they have dealt with in Independence.
