CANCUN, Mexico — Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery said the Big Ten’s addition of Maryland on Monday coupled with the Rutgers’ likely entry on Tuesday will help his program with recruiting.
“In terms of location, I think it’s great,” McCaffery said before Monday’s practice at the Cancun Challenge. “You get two teams from the East. I think that will help us expand our recruiting base into those areas. We certainly have connections there, but now that we are playing teams there, I think that will help us.
“In terms of going into Philly and New Jersey, New York, now that we have two teams in the league that are back East, I think that will really help us.”
Maryland was unanimously approved by Big Ten administrators as the league’s 13th school on Monday. Rutgers reportedly will follow suit on Tuesday.
McCaffery is a Philadelphia native and assistant coach Andrew Francis hails from Brooklyn. Iowa junior forward Melsahn Basabe was raised in Glen Cove, N.Y.
As for how Maryland fits within the Big Ten, McCaffery said, “”When it comes those kinds of things, I trust our leadership within the conference with those decisions.”
