Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine released its first set of NCAA Division I regular-season rankings for the 2012-13 season earlier this week. The University of Iowa is ranked third as a traditional tournament team (TPI- Tournament Power Index) and fourth as a dual team.

University of Northern Iowa is 21st in the TPI, while Iowa State is tied with North Dakota State at 36th. Neither UNI, nor Iowa State, cracked the top-20 dual teams.

For Iowa, senior Matt McDonough and junior Derek St. John earned the top ranking at 125 and 157, respectively. McDonough is the defending 125-pound NCAA champion, capturing his second title in three finals appearances, last March. St. John was the 157-pound NCAA runner-up last season.

Joe Colon is ranked fourth at 133, leading the Panthers. UNI’s Ryan Loder is eighth at 184. Colon and Loder were a win away from achieving all-America status last season.

Sophomore Ryak Finch (125) and junior Boaz Beard (184) are the top-ranked Cyclones. Both are ranked 15th.
