Iowa beats Central Michigan (in basketball)

Iowa moved to 2-0 with a 73-61 home win against Central Michigan.

Iowa went on a 14-3 run midway through the second half to seal the game. Mike Gesell hit a pair of 3-pointers and Devyn Marble drained another to put the game out of reach.

Marble led the Hawkeyes with 18 points, while Gesell scored 15. Aaron White added 14 points and nine rebounds.

Here’s a first-half story:

IOWA CITY — Iowa struggled from the field and committed to many turnovers, but the Hawkeyes still managed a 29-26 halftime lead against Central Michigan tonight at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Iowa committed 11 turnovers through the first half and shot just 35.5 percent from the floor. Central Michigan wasn’t any better with 13 turnovers and sinking just 28.6 percent.

Iowa (1-0) led by seven points at 12-5 after a pair of Gabe Olaseni free throws. However the Chippewas pushed back with a 9-0 run to take a 14-12 lead.

Melsahn Basabe was stout for Iowa with four points, four blocks and three rebounds in nine minutes. Basabe pushed Iowa into the lead at 15-14 with a breakaway dunk with 8 minutes left in the half. Guard Anthony Clemmons capped the half with a 3-pointer with only 2 seconds left.

Devyn Marble led the Hawkeyes with eight points and five rebounds.
