Both parties should work together

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has received condemnation from some in the Republican Party for working with and praising President Obama during Hurricane Sandy.

But wouldn’t it be nice if we could see the moment in New Jersey for what it was: dignified leadership. Both parties working together, being civil and respectful.

Democrats and Republicans need to have humility and graciousness in the next four years. They need to stop confusing civility with compromise and even though they may disagree strongly on their own political beliefs, they can still be polite, talking things out and reaching compromise.

It’s not compromising one’s values to do so. Have mutual respect for what each other believes, but at the same time be constructive and get things worked out for the good of the country.

I hope and pray those in Congress who chose disrespect and hate during President Obama’s first term will begin to follow the lead of Christie and instead choose “dignified leadership” — for our country’s sake.
