A Coggon woman was hurt in a crash that left an out-of-service ambulance on its side Thursday evening near Central City, officials said.

Deputies responded around 6:20 p.m. to a two-vehicle wreck at the corner of Highway 13 and West Maple Street in Central City. According to the Linn County sheriff’s office, Diane K. Unertl, 51, of Coggon, was driving north when she collided with an ambulance driven  by Steven R. Silver, 57, of Hiawatha. The ambulance, which officials said had been retired from service and was being used as a work vehicle, wound up on its side on the highway.

Investigators determined Silver had pulled out in front of Unertl’s vehicle in an attempt to go south on Highway 13. He was issued a citation for failing to yield upon entering through highway, officials said.

Unertl was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids for what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries, officials said. Silver and a passenger in his vehicle, 49-year-old Carla R. Eagles of Hiawatha refused medical treatment at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
