In response to an Oct. 11 letter by Russell Slaman (“Cedar Rapids losing out on gambling money”), I suggest that he spend a little time on the Internet researching the negative aspects of gaming.
After that, visit the local company that has treated thousands of area problem gamblers. Sir, you will learn that although problem gamblers cover all adult age groups from welfare clients to professionals, a very high percentage of the cases come from the low- to middle-income group.
In response to the statement that “All of the Cedar Rapids gambling money is going to areas outside Cedar Rapids,” it is just not factual. All non-Indian casinos are taxed equally by the state. This money goes into the state budget to provide services that you and I receive.
