Hy-Vee Food Stores is seeking a routine change of zoning and approval of a site plan so it can build a new convenience store across the street from its Wilson Avenue SW grocery store.

The proposed 3,100-square-foot store with fuel pumps is slated to go up on two existing commercial sites — Novak Sinclair, which announced last month that it was selling its site to Hy-Vee, and the former Stejskal Florists business next door, which closed in 2011.

Hy-Vee will appear in front of the City Planning Commission at 3 p.m., Thursday, to get approval for its plans. The matter then goes to the City Council.

“No issues or concerns” were raised when the grocer met with neighbors about its plans, according to a report to the commission from the city’s Community Development Department staff.

The department is recommending approval of Hy-Vee’s plans.

In October, Novak Sinclair owner Jim Novak said he would close his service station and move the auto service and used-car portion of the business to a new spot at 4547 Johnson Ave. NW.

Hall & Hall Engineers Inc., Hiawatha, is helping Hy-Vee on the project, and Allen Witt, a principal at the engineering firm, on Wednesday said Hy-Vee expects to begin construction on the convenience store in the Spring of 2013.
