WELL DEFINED: Coe College’s seven-year Defining Moment Campaign paid off with a total of $90 million raised to support four major areas that will assist academics and facilities, operation costs and scholarships for students. That’s $10 million above the goal.
FROM THE EAST: Cedar Rapids has attracted two well-respected, highly experienced men from the eastern region of the nation to important posts here. David McInally has been named the 15th president of Coe College; he’s been at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., since 1986, most recently as executive vice president and treasurer. Wayne Jerman is the city’s new police chief after spending his entire 33-year law career with the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland, advancing from patrol officer to his most recent post as assistant chief.
INSPIRATION: Jalen Howsare of Solon has been blind since undergoing surgery to remove his eyes to stop the spread of tumors when he was 18 months old. Now, as a freshman, his achievements include playing trumpet in the marching band. Credit also his classmates who help guide him during the maneuvers and say Jalen inspires them to do better.
