FROM THE EAST: Cedar Rapids has attracted two well-respected, highly experienced men from the eastern region of the nation to important posts here. David McInally has been named the 15th president of Coe College; he’s been at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., since 1986, most recently as executive vice president and treasurer. Wayne Jerman is the city’s new police chief after spending his entire 33-year law career with the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland, advancing from patrol officer to his most recent post as assistant chief.

INSPIRATION: Jalen Howsare of Solon has been blind since undergoing surgery to remove his eyes to stop the spread of tumors when he was 18 months old.
