Republicans hold a 1,400-person edge over Democrats in the latest voter registration figures issued by the Iowa Secretary of State’s office.

As of Wednesday, 629,443 Iowans had registered as Republicans, 628,043 were registered as Democrats and 694,558 were listed as having no political party affiliation, according to numbers posted by state officials.

The totals show a late surge in both no-party and Democratic registrations since August, while GOP signups continued to grow but at a slower pace. There were 666,279 registered independents at the end of the summer, while Republican held a 18,232-voter lead over Democrats heading into the run up to Tuesday’s general election balloting. Republican registrations totaled 620,868 at the end of August, while 602,636 Iowans had registered as Democrats.

Currently, the total registrations of 1,942,044 were comparable to the number of Iowans who were signed up to vote heading into the 2000 general election, but they’re down from voter registrations for previous presidential elections in 2004 and 2008, when about 71 percent of the total actually cast ballots, according to state data. Iowa has same-day voter registration, so the numbers could change by Tuesday’s balloting.
