IOWA CITY – Iowa City’s finance director will retire in three months.
Kevin O’Malley will retire January 31 after 27 years with the city, according to a memorandum from City Manager Tom Markus released Thursday. O’Malley has been finance director since October 1999.
“While employed at the City he has been widely regarded as a keen financial manager who has not only kept expenditures in check, but also ensured that adequate reserve funds were set aside to cover lean fiscal years and unforeseen emergencies,” Markus wrote. “We wish him well.”
A national search for O’Malley’s successor will start immediately, Markus said.
The city is in the process of drafting next fiscal year’s budget, and that document will likely go to the City Council toward the end of December. The council typically provides much of its input on the budget in January, so O’Malley should be around for that work.
O’Malley’s current salary is $139,610.
