UPDATE: A fire and possible explosion destroyed a single-family home in the Cedar County community of Mechanicsville Thursday morning.

No one was home at the time, and officials said no one was hurt.

Mechanicsville volunteer fire chief Lonni Koch said flames were shooting out the front door of the home at 502 East First St. when firefighters arrived just before 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

While the incident was first reported as an explosion and then a fire, Koch said it’s impossible to tell now which happened first. There were medical devices, inside including oxygen tanks, inside the home that could have exploded from the fire.

The house is owned by Cassie Forde, 29, who lived there with her three children.

The Iowa Fire Marshal’s Office will investigate the cause of the fire.
