The delay-of-game penalty in the two-minute drill, let's talk about that for a second.

It happened with about two minutes left in the game and the Hawkeyes trying to keep alive slim hopes down 28-17 at Northwestern. They had it third-and-4 at NU's 25 when they were called for the 5-yard delay of game.

This made it third-and-9. Vandenberg completed a 6-yard pass to Kevonte Martin-Manley and then on fourth down, Vandenberg missed freshman Tevaun Smith and that ended the afternoon's competitive football contest.

Iowa had three delay of games Saturday. None more confounding than that one.

Here's Kirk Ferentz on it: "On that one in particular, it seemed like the clock went [started] pretty quickly. I'm not making an excuse, but it seemed that way. It was going quick all day, but that's one of those things. The clocks are a little difficult to find here, but that's everybody's job to do that and certainly we've got to get the ball snapped before time expires."

Vandenberg on it: "That's on me, we've got to avoid those in those situations." Was there a clock on that end? "There are on both ends." Did you lose sight? "It's in a different position than maybe most, but the fact is you've got to get the ball snapped."

And here's ESPN2 analyst Joey Galloway, who called the game, on it: "A delay of game in a two-minute situation?" Galloway said. "I don't recall seeing anyone ever taking delay of game in a two-minute offensive situation. The way their offense is run, they can't afford to give up those 5 yards because their passes have only been 3 to 4 yards long. They're killing themselves with this slow offense and taking these delay penalties."

OK, here are the two deeps:

-- Matt Tobin remains the left tackle. My guess is Nolan MacMillan takes the left guard spot over Jordan Walsh. RG Austin Blythe returned last week.

-- RB Mark Weisman isn't listed after his latest leg injury. Not sure how serious. I think coaches considered putting him in on the goal line late in the game last week.

– Senior Greg Castillo is still listed ahead of junior B.J. Lowery at cornerback.

– True freshman Drew Ott is listed as the No. 2 DE. I wonder if redshirt frosh Riley McMinn isn't hurt. I don't remember him on the road trip last week.

-- There are 12 freshmen on this week's depth chart.

– Iowa’s game with Purdue at Kinnick Stadium next week will be televised on the Big Ten Network with an 11 a.m. kickoff.
