The University of Iowa will name its under-construction varsity golf complex at Finkbine Golf Course as the Hoak Family Golf Complex, after state regents approved the plan Thursday.

The UI naming is in honor of the family of Jim Hoak and the family’s support of the university. Jim Hoak, 93, was a UI golfer and 1940 UI graduate, UI Athletics Director Gary Barta said.

Various family and friends of the Hoaks made gifts totaling $500,000 to support construction of the new golf complex, officials said.

Hoak retired in 1985 and now resides in Florida, but he and his wife Jane raised their family in Des Moines, and for more than 20 years, Jim Hoak was president and general manager of Wheeler Consolidated/Wheeler Lumber.
