Man stabbed with steak knife in Cedar Rapids; suspect arrested

Victim expected to recover

A man was stabbed with a steak knife Wednesday morning in Cedar Rapids, but is expected to recover.

Police arrested Derek A. Loffer, 24, of 4107 M Ave. NW on suspicion of willful injury in connection with the incident. He is accused of stabbing Jeremy Cloven, 31, of Cedar Rapids, multiple times in the torso and arms.

According to a police report, Cloven looked outside and saw someone standing beside his car, near the intersection of 34th Street and Soutter Avenue SE. Cloven went outside to see what was going on, and an altercation ensued that resulted in the stabbing.

Police were dispatched to the area around 6:05 a.m. and located Cloven. He was Cloven was taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center. His injuries are not considered life-threatening, police said.

Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said investigators have not been able to find any previous connection between Loffer and Cloven.

Loffer was taken to the Linn County Jail.
