Iowa's Greg Garmon (4) makes a cut back in front of Northern Illinois' Courtney Stephen (14) as he returns a kick during the second half of their college football game Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012 at Soldier Field in Chicago. Iowa won the game 18-17. (Brian Ray/The Gazette-KCRG)
Here are some quick updates from the Kirk Ferentz radio show:
On Weisman: He’s been practicing, but really he hasn’t done much. Ferentz said his sprained ankle isn’t serious, not talking weeks, but he is unlikely to play this week. Maybe.
Ferentz did say the standard, “Can’t count on him.”
True freshman Greg Garmon, sophomore Jordan Canzeri and true freshman Michael Malloy are in the chute, Ferentz said. (That’s the first time he’s mentioned Malloy since Weisman’s injury last week at Michigan State. I think with Weisman’s rise, the plan was to redshirt Malloy. I also think the plan was to redshirt Canzeri, who is coming off the torn ACL from spring. Well, Weisman is possibly out of commission, so all the redshirts are coming off.)
On QB James Vandenberg and the passing game: “A lot of people are worried about James, I’m not. That’s [the passing game] all going to work itself out.”
FB Brad Rogers as the RB? Probably not, Ferentz said. Rogers can run out of the one-back sets, but won’t be used as the running back.
KF: “Passing numbers more than respectable outside of the touchdown passes. I’m not as fixated on stats.”
Ferentz said all true frosh OL/DL should be able to redshirt. I think the only one who was anywhere near in play was OT Ryan Ward, but I don’t think it ever would’ve come to him.
Recruiting question that basically said how can Iowa get some better players (no, that wasn’t a warm opening): ”It would help if we had 10 million more people in our state.”
BTW, according to HawkeyeReport.com, Iowa will have 29 recruits at Saturday night’s game. A lot of them will be on unofficial visits. Some also will be recruits for the ’14 class.
BTW No. 2, I think Iowa signs close to 20 in this class, so at least five more.
KF on junior corner B.J. Lowery, freshman guard Blythe: Lowery didn’t practice last week. Close to 100 percent. Blythe good week and is back. They might not start, will play.
Total confidence in sophomore Andrew Donnal and Blythe.
KF: Fans are juiced up for night games.
They talked about no night games in November for the Big Ten. Dolph mentioned it was because it’s dark. KF thought maybe weather. I’m going to go with the weather one.
OK, that’s it for tonight’s show.
There are only five more of these. This season is flying.
Speaking of visits, why is Rucker still taking them?

I thought KF pulls offers when “commits” dally??
I think that went out the window when Iowa decided to speed up the clock on recruiting and picked up 16 commits before the season started.
Thanks for the link. I love this question:
Gopher Hole: Obviously, Minnesota has made it known that they want to keep all the top players in-state and with you being one of those players, it has to make you feel pretty proud that they are still showing you a lot of love.
For a guy who has 38 touches, career, Canzeri’s eligibility is about to be 50% gone with #39 this Saturday. I hope that if he plays he gets meaningful minutes the rest of the year.
Football really needs an early signing period, per hoops. I don’t understand the institutional resistance to the idea. The overlong hunting season just invites sketchy behavior by all involved. (Not saying that there’s anything sketchy with Kenney.)
