Winneshiek County authorities are searching for two subjects who should be considered armed and dangerous in the Ossian and Castalia areas.
Schools in South Winneshiek Community School District went into a precautionary lockdown because of a report of a “discharged weapon” in Ossian around 7:30 a.m., according to Superintendent Chris Hoover. Other schools in the Postville and North Fayette districts also were not letting anyone in or out of their buildings as of 11 a.m.
Authorities were not confirming a location for the incident, but a resident who lives in Ossian told The Gazette could see eight law enforcement vehicles outside of a house near the corner of South Hall Street and East Main Street.
A dispatcher at the sheriff’s office said he was not aware of any injuries associated with the incident.
Authorities were advising residents not to approach the two subjects, who are wanted on arrest warrants. Residents have been asked to lock any doors to houses or vehicles in the area, and to report any suspicious activity.
South Winneshiek Middle School is a few blocks from where the police cars were parked. Hoover said at the request of the sheriff’s office, about 600 students in Ossian and Calmar are in a precautionary lockdown until further notice from officials.
“Everyone followed all of the emergency procedures,” Hoover said. “Everyone is safe.”
