Hey recruit-niks, 77.3 percent of Iowa’s scoring this season has come from a walk-on and a former walk-on

Weisman and Meyer, and pray for rain

Indianapolis Pike High School defensive end David Kenney has de-committed from Iowa’s football recruiting class of 2013, and may end up at Indiana.

I’ve seen some of the Hoosiers’ last two games. They need the defensive help.

Mike Meyer. So money. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette-KCRG)

Me, I’m not a recruit-nik. Although, I’ll always bet on the team loaded with five-star recruits over a team loaded with no-stars.

Still, aberrations occur. Take the one at Iowa, for example.

Of the 132 points scored by Iowa in its six games this season, 102 were tallied by a current walk-on or a former walk-on. Current walk-on Mark Weisman has scored 48 points on eight touchdowns. Former walk-on Mike Meyer has kicked for 54 points, and only one player in the nation (Brett Baer of Louisana-Lafayette) is averaging more field goals per game this year.

No one else on the Hawkeyes has more than six points. Damon Bullock, Jordan Cotton, Christian Kirksey, Kevonte Martin-Manley and James Vandenberg all have one touchdown.

Meyer has made his last 13 field goal tries. The Iowa record is 22, set by Nate Kaeding in 2001-2002. Kaeding said this about Meyer in an e-mail to me:

“Coming out of last year you could sense he had all the tools to put together a complete and consistent year. … He has a strong leg, a simple/consistent/fluid/rhythmical kicking motion that he’s refined over the last two years with hundreds of hours of very deliberate practice.”

Kaeding wore uniform No. 95 at Iowa. Meyer wears No. 96. I’m guessing there’s a story there.
