The developer of a southwest Cedar Rapids shopping center anchored by a new Kohl’s store says construction crews are working toward a spring 2013 opening date.
Gerry Ambrose of Ambrose Development in Coralville said work is progressing rapidly on the 55,000-square-foot department store that will anchor Wiley Center.
“The store is scheduled to open in March,” Ambrose said. “The construction company hired by Kohl’s works very quickly to get these stores done.
“We’re hoping to have the stoplights up at 31st Avenue and Wiley Boulevard SW around the first week in November. Our big Kohl’s sign will go up the first week in November, which also will have space for other retailers.”
Ambrose said there is interest by additional stores in the U-shape retail development between Menards and a branch of Collins Community Credit Union.
“We have some activity regarding some of our outparcels,” he said.
“We have an offer going back and forth, but nothing has been finalized. We know what we want to have there and we think there will be a lot of interest after the Kohl’s store opens.”
All Kohl’s stores constructed since fall 2008 are designed to achieve LEED certification. The company uses energy-efficient LED lights to illuminate general parking areas and provide pedestrian safety, but not send light into the night sky or onto adjacent property.
Ambrose said work on the streetlights and parking lot for the new Kohl’s store should be completed within the next couple of weeks.
Menomonee Falls, Wis.-based Kohl’s operates an 81,000-square-foot department store in the Northland Square Shopping Center at 361 Collins Rd. NE. That store opened in March 1995.
